Security guard jobs are on the rise in the world that we live in. For better or for worse there is a great need for security to protect against a variety of threats that can affect both property and safety. If you are looking into security guard training you should also be aware of some of the requirements for the job. Be clear that this job is not for everyone. Do not be deceived by portrayals on television or movies, or think that you know everything about the job just from seeing security guards walk around at the local shopping mall. Until you go through the training or actually perform the job, it is highly unlikely you know everything about security guard jobs.

Security Guard Jobs – Requirements
In most instances you will need to have first aid and CPR training. While such programs are often included in security guard training courses, it never hurts to enrol on classes beforehand. Make sure you pay attention and learn well. If you work at the job long enough in the general public, chances are you will need to use life saving skills at some point in your career.
You will need to have at least a basic command of the language that you will be working in – usually English. While you do not have to be entirely an expert, you do need a basic level that will allow you to perform your duties in an effective manner. Quite often, knowledge of a second language can also come in handy if you are working in diverse and multicultural areas.
While you won’t technically be considered a law enforcement officer, you will be required to have a good knowledge of the law. The last thing you want is to get yourself in trouble by over-stepping your bounds or breaking the law yourself in any attempts to keep people safe. Security guard training programs will cover your mandate and should familiarize you with local regulations, but it never hurts to learn on your own. You might also find it interesting to learn what differing rules affect different rules. Ultimately you can be doing the same job as someone else in a different state, but have different tools at your disposal.
As a security guard you will need a keen sense of perception. Your most valuable tools will be your own five senses. A good guard has good vision and a keen sense of hearing. You should also be in some way a good judge of body language and behaviour. Knowing people and how to deal with them effectively is a big part of security patrol. Your perception will make you a great asset to the company you work for and the people you protect.
Another key characteristic you should posses is patience. A good guard is not one to rush to decisions. You will be interacting with people, sometimes in high volume or stressful situations and your best weapon, much more than any firearm will be your ability to reason and negotiate. If you are looking for action or hungry to beat up bad guys, then security is not for you. Ultimately, if you are doing your job properly, there should me a minimum of violence, damage to property, or harm to the general public. Security guard jobs can indeed be exciting and rewarding, but do not make the mistake of entering into this with action movies or elaborate fight scenes on your mind.
